BMW CCV KIT: There is also a mesh screen inside the valve cover that can clog and/or collapse. BMW does not sell this screen separately and you are suppose to replace the valve cover. However this company sells just the screen. There is a test method described in that link and also a guide on how to replace the screen. First with the engine at warm idle with the vacuum hose connected to the fuel pressure regulator take a measurement. This is the low end fuel pressure. The next thing you do is disconnect the vacuum hose from the fuel pressure regulator and then take a fuel pressure measurement. This is the high end fuel pressure. One of my Sacramento, CA area indy's, Valley Motorwerks (916-636-9526) did mine for 2.1 hours ($210). At that rate, and due to the delicate nature of the parts and any resulting damage my hamfists and anger mgt "issues" would most likely reap during such a delicate operation, I thought it was well worth it. The best temporary to do is disconnect the pipe from valve cover to CCV open to let the pressure out of the crankcase and this should reduce oil leak (crank seals, dipstick seal, oil pan gasket, etc.). This high positive crank pressure can empty the oil if a seal finally busted, leading to ruined engine. G. A failed CCV diaphragm will send oil in to the intake, over time you would be able to notice the drop in level on the dipstick. However a burning oil smell may or may not be related, I don't believe any of the CCV hoses which may have failed are near exhaust components.
